About the Chorus
The Chorus is a special project of the office of the mayor of the Village of Bolingbrook.
We are a volunteer choral group dedicated to enriching our community through the shared experience of singing. Since our founding in 1973, we have welcomed singers of every age and ability to make music together.
We perform a varied repertoire — from classical and sacred works to Broadway, folk, and seasonal favorites.
Our History
The Bolingbrook Community Chorus began in the fall of 1973 when the church choirs of New Life Lutheran, St. Dominic's Catholic, and the First Presbyterian Church of DuPage combined to perform a Christmas concert for the Village. That first endeavor was directed by Art Heintz, the choir director of New Life Lutheran, and took place at the West View School Multi-Purpose Room in December 1973.
In the spring of 1977, the Bolingbrook Choir decided to change its name to the Bolingbrook Community Chorus in order to shift the emphasis away from the idea of church choirs. By doing so, it hoped to attract more singers who might not have been affiliated with any church. The Spring Concert of 1977 marked the largest membership of the chorus - 55 members. The concert was entitled “Potpourri,” since it featured different types of music - not only religious, as had been the previous tradition.
From 1977 on, the Chorus has performed concerts in the Village both for the Christmas and spring seasons. Several directors have served over the years: Art Heintz, Joanne Bartholomew, Ron Helfert, Bob DaCosta, Bill Bredeweg, Lois Siegel, Lisa Gawlik, Kate Loeffler and now our present director, Dr. Paul Melidona. Many accompanists have also served - Sally Schlegel, Michelle Braxton, and Kevin Brown.
The operations of the chorus are handled by an executive committee of officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Librarian and Treasurer. The chorus also has a historian to keep photos and programs from the various concerts.
